In my work, I often encounter spaces with insufficient natural light that are cold, dull, and unpleasant. I observe that many architects do not fully grasp the importance of a warm ambiance that offers a pleasant atmosphere to individuals, let alone know how to create such an environment. However, it’s something we all need. We don’t need cold spaces that make us feel more distant or even encourage us to escape from them.
You see, people are still subconsciously connected to nature in some way. Some more, some less, but we all desire a sense of well-being. Two seemingly trivial examples support this notion. I know a gentleman who always has a TV channel with a fireplace on in his city apartment in the evenings. He says he wants to visually change the atmosphere in the living room, making it a bit more pleasant for him. See? People themselves seek their own solutions to feel good.
Another example is a survey I conducted among students last year. I must admit I was extremely surprised at how many students use candles when studying at home.
And what about you? Do you use a fireplace, a wood stove, or candles? Despite my enthusiasm for technological advancements, I still believe in the power of the classic beauty of fire in our homes. Why? In the event of a power outage, wood elements serve as an excellent alternative to modern devices. Also, the ambiance created by fire is priceless! The scent, the soothing crackling, the warmth, and the enchanting flames – all of these contribute to a unique comfort. Observing flames can create a sense of security, increasing the feelings of comfort and relaxation. So, why not incorporate elements reminiscent of fire into your spaces?
Here are some ideas:
- If you don’t have a fireplace, use candles made of natural materials with soothing scents. They promote the formation of serotonin and dopamine, supporting a positive mood.
- Art installations mimicking the sun can liven up a space and create a unique atmosphere.
- Warm light bulbs bring a sense of warmth. Place them in corners where you want to achieve coziness.
- Emulate natural sunlight with lights that reproduce the full spectrum of light. They are excellent for indoor spaces without natural light, such as offices or workspaces.
